Prices and rates: what really makes a quote vary
Searching for "cleaner prices" or "gardener rates" gives you price ranges everywhere, but rarely an explanation. Yet in these trades, two quotes can differ by a factor of two for good reasons — and this page tells you which ones.
Why UpMyChain does not publish any average rates
Because the platform has not recorded any transactions to date. Displaying an "observed range" would mean making up a figure, and a made-up figure does not help you decide: it gives you a false benchmark for negotiating. Once jobs have actually been carried out and paid for here, the averages will be published along with the number of observations.
What the platform offers in the meantime is something else, and more useful: you describe your need once, and you receive quotes in the same format. With the same area, duration, materials and travel, the price difference finally becomes clear — something no average range can do.
The six factors that set the price, whatever the trade
- The actual time on site, not the floor area. A very dirty one-bedroom flat takes longer than a well-kept three-bedroom one.
- Access. An upper floor with no lift, a pedestrian zone, terraced land, no parking: carrying and travel cost money, and rightly so.
- Materials — products, linen, consumables, parts. Who pays for them up front, who re-invoices them, and at what price.
- Waste removal. For gardening and building work, taking away and processing waste often accounts for half of the actual work.
- The time slot. A job in the evening, on a Sunday or on a public holiday costs more. So does a turnaround squeezed into three hours between two stays.
- Regularity. An annual contract is not priced like a one-off job: the pro spreads their travel costs and secures their schedule.
What a quote must contain to be comparable
- the company's identity and its SIRET number;
- travel: charged or not, deducted or not if the work goes ahead;
- labour: rate and any surcharges;
- materials, itemised — never a single "parts" line;
- the VAT rate (TVA) applied;
- the validity period and the lead time for the job.
A reliable professional provides these details, including by message. Refusing to put an amount in writing before starting work is an answer in itself.
Two tax rules that change the amount you pay
Reduced VAT on building work. Improvement, conversion or maintenance work carried out in a home completed more than two years ago may qualify for a reduced VAT rate, significantly lower than the standard rate. Routine repairs are often included.
The tax benefit for personal services. Cleaning and ironing at home, light gardening, minor DIY, childcare and personal assistance fall under personal services (services à la personne). A company that has made the corresponding declaration allows its private clients to benefit from the tax advantage attached to these services: for the same displayed price, the real cost is not the same.

Frequently asked questions about prices
How much does a cleaner cost in the Alpes-Maritimes?
UpMyChain does not publish an average rate, for the reason explained above. What makes this amount vary: the actual duration, the frequency, who supplies the products, access to the property, and whether or not the company is registered for personal services — this last point changes the final cost for a private individual.
Is travel always charged?
No, and this is exactly what you should ask them to specify. Some companies include it, others charge it and then deduct it if the job goes ahead. Two quotes, one of which includes travel and the other does not, cannot be compared as they stand.
Why is an emergency quote more expensive?
Because it pulls a professional away from their schedule, often in the evening or at the weekend, and because it involves an on-site diagnosis without preparation. The question to ask yourself before calling is whether the situation is a genuine emergency: an active leak is one, a dripping mixer tap is not.
What happens if the price changes during the job?
Any overrun must be agreed before it is carried out. On UpMyChain, the amount paid is that of the accepted quote, it remains held until you approve the work, and any change requires a new written agreement on the platform.
